In a move aimed at addressing local concerns, Essex County Council will initiate patrols in areas frequented by asylum seekers. This three-month trial, named Operation Vanguard, will deploy six trained security operatives in Braintree, Chelmsford, and Colchester, operating daily from 10:00 to 18:00. The council asserts that this initiative is a direct response to residents’ worries about anti-social behaviour linked to gatherings of male migrants.
Despite the council’s intentions, the Essex Police Chief Constable has reported that crime associated with the Wethersfield asylum accommodation is very low. Critics, including local Liberal Democrats, have expressed concerns that the patrols may exacerbate community tensions rather than alleviate them. They argue that effective policing should involve established local officers who understand the community dynamics.
The funding for this initiative will come from a community innovation fund, ensuring there is no additional cost to taxpayers. The council’s leader emphasised the importance of public safety, particularly for vulnerable groups like women and children, while also acknowledging the need for community integration and understanding.
