Algeria’s Controversial Death Penalty Proposal Sparks Outcry

Algeria is facing significant backlash over proposed changes to its death penalty laws, particularly in the wake of devastating wildfires that have claimed lives and destroyed communities. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directive to classify wildfire arson as a capital crime has raised alarms among human rights advocates, who fear it could be used to suppress political dissent.

Amnesty International has called for an immediate halt to these plans, highlighting that Algeria has not executed anyone in over 30 years. The rights group warns that the government may exploit these laws to target opposition groups, particularly following the arrests of individuals accused of arson and subversion since the wildfires.

The wildfires, which resulted in at least 12 fatalities, have already been linked to a broader governmental strategy of blaming opposition movements for national crises. In 2021, similar accusations led to numerous prosecutions under terrorism-related charges, further complicating the political landscape in Algeria.

Amnesty urges the Algerian government to focus on addressing the underlying causes of climate disasters rather than pursuing harsh penalties against alleged arsonists. This situation underscores the intersection of environmental issues and political repression in Algeria, raising concerns about the future of civil liberties in the country.
