Syria’s New Government Faces Kurdish Discontent Amid Court Abolishment

Syria’s parliament has recently abolished the al-Assad-era Counter-Terrorism Court, a significant move reflecting the new government’s intent to distance itself from the oppressive past. This court, established in 2012, was notorious for prosecuting thousands under vague terrorism charges, often leading to arbitrary detentions and human rights abuses. The abolition is seen as a step towards reform, but it comes at a time of rising tensions in the Kurdish regions, where discontent is brewing over fuel price hikes and integration into the central government.

The Kurdish population, which had gained autonomy during the civil war, is now facing challenges as the government reasserts control. Recent protests have erupted over rising fuel costs, exacerbated by the removal of subsidies that previously kept prices low under Kurdish administration. The government’s decision to hike petrol and diesel prices has sparked demonstrations, indicating a growing frustration among Kurds who fear losing their hard-won rights and autonomy.

Additionally, the new government’s approach to Kurdish language education has raised eyebrows. While Kurdish is now officially recognised, the limited provision of classes has led to protests among students who previously enjoyed a more robust educational framework. This situation highlights the delicate balance the new government must strike between integrating Kurdish interests and maintaining national unity.

As President Ahmed al-Sharaa navigates these complexities, the future of Kurdish rights and regional stability remains uncertain. The integration of Kurdish forces into the Syrian army, while seen as a potential pathway for inclusion, also raises concerns about the erosion of the autonomy that Kurds fought to establish during the conflict. The coming months will be crucial in determining how effectively the new government can unify a country still grappling with the aftermath of war.
