Women in England with HER2-low advanced breast cancer will now have access to Enhertu, a life-extending drug, following successful negotiations over its pricing. This approval marks a significant milestone, allowing approximately 1,000 women annually to benefit from a treatment that has shown to nearly double progression-free survival compared to standard chemotherapy.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) had previously deemed Enhertu too expensive, but recent changes in its funding framework allowed for a new agreement. This shift means that the NHS can now allocate up to £35,000 per patient per year for treatments, which is crucial for accessing innovative therapies like Enhertu.

The drug’s introduction is expected to have profound implications for patients and their families, offering them additional time and improved quality of life. Campaigners and healthcare professionals have hailed this decision as a victory after years of advocacy, highlighting the importance of continued pressure on pharmaceutical pricing and NHS funding policies.

As Enhertu becomes available in England, it is anticipated that similar approvals will follow in Wales and Northern Ireland, further expanding access to this critical treatment. This development not only reflects advancements in cancer care but also underscores the ongoing need for effective negotiation strategies in the healthcare sector.
