Calls to Proscribe Patriot Platform After Protests

A Labour peer has urged the UK government to consider classifying the Patriot Platform as a terror group following recent protests in Dover and Portsmouth. Baroness Chakrabarti, a former head of the civil rights group Liberty, expressed concerns that the group’s actions and attire resemble those of a ‘private army’, drawing historical parallels to the blackshirts of the 1930s.

The protests, led by activist Daniel Thomas, aimed to highlight issues surrounding Britain’s migrant crisis. However, Chakrabarti argues that the group’s intentions appear to incite violence and intimidation, raising questions about public safety and the limits of freedom of expression.

This call for proscription comes amid ongoing debates about the government’s approach to groups like Palestine Action, which has faced significant legal repercussions. Chakrabarti’s comments suggest a growing urgency for lawmakers to address perceived double standards in how different groups are treated under the law.

As public sentiment shifts regarding protests and masked demonstrations, the implications of such a proscription could lead to stricter regulations on protest activities, impacting how citizens express dissent in the future.
