Fiji’s HIV Emergency: A Crisis Fueled by Drug Use

Fiji has declared a national emergency in response to a dramatic rise in HIV infections, now affecting one in 60 adults. This alarming trend is closely linked to an increase in methamphetamine use, which has become rampant in the Pacific nation. The health minister has stated that the previous outbreak-level response is no longer adequate, highlighting the urgent need for a coordinated national strategy.

The statistics are stark: new HIV diagnoses have surged, with over 2,000 cases reported in 2025 alone. Pregnant women are particularly affected, with one in 50 testing positive for the virus. The situation is exacerbated by unsafe injecting practices and a lack of access to clean needles, as Fiji’s geographical position makes it a hub for drug trafficking.

Cultural stigma and low health awareness further complicate the crisis, with only 39% of those living with HIV aware of their status. The UN has noted that more than half of the cases are linked to sexual transmission, while a significant portion is due to injecting drug use. The government plans to introduce a needle and syringe programme to combat the epidemic.

UNAIDS has welcomed Fiji’s emergency declaration, emphasizing the need for robust health systems to respond to such crises. The situation serves as a reminder that the fight against HIV/AIDS is far from over, and urgent action is required to prevent further escalation of this public health emergency.
