NHS Waiting Lists Continue to Climb in Wales

The number of people waiting for NHS treatment in Wales has increased for the fourth consecutive month, with nearly 709,700 individuals awaiting planned treatments as of July. This includes over 4,700 patients who have been waiting for two years or more, marking a 15% rise in just one month and an alarming 82% increase since March.

The Welsh government has acknowledged the disappointing figures, with Health Minister Mabon Ap Gwynfor stating that addressing the backlog remains a top priority. The government is implementing measures, including a £145 million funding boost aimed at reducing waiting times and expediting treatments. However, the effects of these initiatives may not be felt immediately due to a reporting lag of around seven weeks.

One significant change proposed is the elimination of automatic follow-up appointments unless specifically requested by patients. This could potentially free up tens of thousands of appointments for those waiting to see a specialist for the first time. While the government aims to eradicate two-year waits within months, a detailed timeline for achieving this goal has not been provided.

Despite improvements in A&E waiting times, challenges remain, with only 63.8% of patients seen within the four-hour target. The government insists that while progress is being made, sustained efforts are crucial to ensure the NHS can meet its targets and provide timely care to all patients.
