Italy’s Rise in the Space Economy: A New Contender

Italy is emerging as a significant player in the European space economy, now spending more relative to its GDP than all but Luxembourg. This shift has occurred over the past 15 years, with Italy’s investment in civilian space projects surpassing that of France, marking a notable change in the landscape of European space exploration.

The OECD’s recent report highlights Italy’s space sector as a strategic industrial ecosystem, comparable to established fields like aerospace and telecommunications. With an estimated output of €8 million, this growth reflects a broader trend where countries are increasingly recognising the economic potential of space.

As Italy ramps up its spending, it is also focusing on research and development, allocating 14% of its civil R&D funds to space initiatives in 2024. This is significantly higher than the OECD average, suggesting a commitment to innovation that could yield long-term benefits for the economy.

However, while Italy’s civilian space budget is growing, it still lags behind the military investments of Germany, which plans to invest heavily in space-related defence capabilities. This dual focus on civilian and military applications indicates a complex future for Italy’s role in the European space sector, with potential implications for national security and international collaboration.
