Future of UK Youth Parliament in Jeopardy

The UK Youth Parliament, established to engage young people in politics, faces potential closure due to lack of government funding. Launched in 2000, it has over 300 elected members aged 11 to 18, allowing them to debate in the House of Commons. However, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport has not committed to future financial support, raising concerns about the impact on youth democracy.

Critics argue that scrapping the parliament would undermine young people’s political engagement, especially as a Bill to lower the voting age to 16 is progressing through Parliament. The Youth Parliament has been a platform for young voices, with members like Labour MP Keir Mather starting their political journeys there. Yet, some MPs believe it should be funded through private donations rather than taxpayer money.

A recent review indicated that awareness of the Youth Parliament is low, with only a quarter of young people familiar with it. The government is exploring new ways to involve youth in decision-making, particularly focusing on under-represented groups. This shift could reshape how young people engage with politics, but it raises questions about the effectiveness of any new initiatives.

As discussions continue, the future of the Youth Parliament remains uncertain. The potential loss of this platform could diminish opportunities for young people to influence government decisions, highlighting the need for sustained investment in youth engagement initiatives.
