Reviving Traditional Scything to Protect Rare Bees

A new initiative in Somerset aims to revive the historic skill of scything while supporting one of Britain’s rarest bee species, the shrill carder bee. Volunteers, primarily young people, are being trained to use traditional hand tools to manage meadows at English Heritage’s Muchelney Abbey. This effort not only preserves an age-old practice but also addresses the pressing issue of declining bee populations due to habitat loss.

The project, in collaboration with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, involves detailed wildlife surveys to monitor the relationship between the bees and their meadow habitats. Volunteers will explore how traditional scything methods can complement modern management techniques, enhancing biodiversity and creating flower-rich environments crucial for pollinators.

As volunteers hone their skills, they will receive bread and cheese as a form of payment, echoing historical practices. This unique combination of tradition and conservation demonstrates the potential for age-old skills to contribute meaningfully to contemporary environmental challenges.

By engaging a new generation in these practices, English Heritage aims to protect both the landscape and the knowledge that has shaped it for centuries. This initiative could inspire similar projects across the UK, fostering a deeper connection between communities and their natural heritage.
