Cornwall Considers Ban on Disposable Barbecues at Beaches

Cornwall Council is contemplating a ban on disposable barbecues at its beaches due to safety concerns about dangerously hot sand. This move follows a growing awareness of the fire risks associated with these barbecues, especially during heatwaves. Councillor James Mustoe has been vocal about the potential dangers, highlighting incidents where discarded barbecues have caused injuries by heating the sand beneath them.

The council is exploring the use of Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) to enforce this ban, similar to existing restrictions on dogs in certain areas. Discussions with the Cornwall Fire Service are already underway, indicating a proactive approach to public safety. If implemented, the ban would initially last for three years, subject to renewal after further consultations.

This proposed ban aligns with broader national efforts to restrict the use of single-use barbecues during periods of heightened fire risk. Recently, similar measures were announced in other regions, reflecting a growing trend towards prioritising public safety in outdoor spaces. The implications of such a ban could affect local businesses that sell these products, as seen by one retailer who has already removed disposable barbecues from shelves.

As climate change continues to pose challenges, Cornwall’s initiative could signal a shift in how communities manage outdoor activities. This could lead to more stringent regulations across the UK, impacting not just beachgoers but also the retail landscape for disposable barbecues.
