Surge in Drone Attacks in Colombia Raises Alarms for Civilians

In early 2026, Colombia has seen a staggering 146% increase in drone attacks by armed groups compared to the previous year. This surge has resulted in 21 fatalities and 145 injuries, with civilians making up nearly a third of the casualties. The psychological impact of these attacks extends beyond immediate harm, as the constant drone buzz instills fear in communities, disrupting daily life and leading to displacement.

The use of drones by armed groups has become a tactic for both surveillance and direct attacks, complicating the Colombian government’s efforts to maintain security. The attacks have targeted not only rival groups but also state forces, with drones being employed to monitor illegal coca fields. This escalation has hindered humanitarian efforts and restricted access to essential services, exacerbating the plight of affected populations.

Colombian authorities are responding with a $1.68 billion initiative to develop an anti-drone shield, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The government, under President Abelardo de la Espriella, is intensifying military operations against these groups, supported by US military technology. However, the rugged terrain of Colombia poses significant challenges in neutralising these aerial threats.

As armed groups increasingly recruit children and train them in drone warfare, the implications for future generations are dire. The ongoing conflict not only threatens immediate safety but also jeopardises long-term stability and recovery in the region, raising critical questions about the future of Colombian society amidst this escalating violence.
