Uzbekistan’s Major Companies Set for International Listings

Uzbekistan is gearing up to list some of its largest state-linked companies on international markets, with the national telecommunications operator Uztelecom leading the charge. This initiative aims to attract private and international investment while enhancing corporate governance and transparency, which are crucial for public investors. The success of this programme could significantly reshape Uzbekistan’s economic landscape by providing global investors access to major corporate assets.

The National Investment Fund of Uzbekistan (UzNIF) is at the forefront of this transformation, having already made its debut on the London market. With plans to list several companies across sectors like telecommunications, aviation, and energy, the fund is undergoing substantial governance reforms to meet international standards. This includes appointing independent directors and restructuring decision-making processes, which are vital for maintaining investor confidence.

The potential listings are not just about changing ownership; they could inject fresh capital into these companies, enabling them to fund significant infrastructure projects. This is particularly important for sectors like energy and telecommunications, where substantial investments are needed to modernise and expand services. The government will have priority in selling shares, ensuring that the state retains a significant stake in these vital industries.

As Uzbekistan navigates this ambitious capital-market reform, the outcomes will be closely watched. The success of these listings could serve as a benchmark for future economic reforms, potentially attracting more foreign investment and fostering a more robust corporate governance culture in the region.
