Pakistan’s Defence Pact with Saudi Arabia: A Double-Edged Sword

Pakistan’s recent defence agreement with Saudi Arabia could plunge the nation into a complex Middle Eastern conflict. While the pact promises financial aid and military cooperation, its activation amidst escalating tensions with the Houthis in Yemen could force Pakistan to commit troops, further straining its already fragile economy and security situation.

As the situation in the Middle East deteriorates, Pakistan’s military leadership faces mounting pressure to support Saudi Arabia. This involvement could alienate Pakistan from Iran, a country with which it has historically maintained ties. Analysts warn that any military engagement could incite domestic unrest, particularly among Shia communities, and exacerbate existing insurgencies within Pakistan.

The Mecca joint defence agreement not only binds Pakistan to Saudi Arabia but also to Turkey, complicating its geopolitical stance. Should Pakistan enter the fray, it risks igniting further conflict along its borders, particularly with Iran and in Balochistan, potentially leading to a rise in militancy.

With the implications of this pact still unfolding, the Pakistani government must navigate a treacherous path. The decision-making process, largely opaque and dominated by military leaders, raises concerns about the long-term consequences for Pakistan’s stability and regional relations.
