Australia’s Push for Big Tech Support in Online Safety and AI Regulation

Australia is intensifying its efforts to enhance online safety and regulate artificial intelligence, seeking collaboration from major tech companies. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently met with Apple’s Tim Cook, emphasizing that the country cannot tackle these challenges alone. Albanese highlighted the need for stronger protections for children against online dangers, indicating that new legislation will impose a ‘duty of care’ on platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

The proposed laws, set to be introduced later this year, will allow users to disable algorithms that can lead to harmful content. This move follows previous legislation that barred children under 16 from social media, although reports suggest many still access these platforms. The government aims to ensure that technology serves the interests of Australians, rather than the other way around.

Albanese’s call for tech giants to step up comes amid rising concerns about the safety of online environments, particularly for younger users. The new standards for AI are expected to be unveiled by the end of the year, reflecting a proactive approach to emerging technologies and their implications for society.

However, the opposition has expressed concerns about the current form of the legislation, arguing it may infringe on free speech and concentrate too much power in the hands of the Communications Minister. As Australia navigates these complex issues, the collaboration with big tech could shape the future of online safety and AI regulation significantly.
