Redrawing Africa’s Image: A Shift in Global Perception

A recent UN resolution aims to change how the world views Africa by endorsing more accurate map projections. The Correct the Map initiative, supported by 164 member states, seeks to replace the outdated Mercator projection with the Equal Earth projection, reflecting Africa’s true size and significance. This shift is not just about geography; it symbolizes a broader movement to decolonize knowledge and reshape narratives surrounding the continent.

Countries like Mali are taking steps to remove colonial influences from their education systems, focusing on local history and identity. This change is seen as crucial for fostering national pride and intellectual independence. By prioritising African history, these nations aim to reclaim their narratives and strengthen their cultural foundations.

The media’s portrayal of Africa as a crisis-ridden continent has economic implications, with estimates suggesting that biased coverage could cost the continent billions annually. Campaigns like #NotWaiting are emerging to challenge these stereotypes, encouraging Africans to reshape their self-image and highlight positive developments across the continent.

As these initiatives gain momentum, they could lead to significant changes in how Africa is perceived globally. This shift may not only enhance national pride but also influence international relations and economic opportunities, ultimately contributing to a more balanced understanding of Africa’s role in the world.
