Preventable Hip Fractures Highlight NHS Inequities

A new NHS-funded report reveals that nearly 10,000 hip fractures annually could be avoided if all patients had access to Fracture Liaison Services (FLS). Currently, only 51% of NHS trusts offer these vital services, leading to a significant postcode lottery in osteoporosis care. This disparity not only affects patient outcomes but also places a heavy financial burden on the NHS, costing approximately £1.1 billion in the first 120 days post-fracture.

The report underscores that many patients, particularly those who have already suffered a fracture, are not receiving the necessary treatment to strengthen their bones. With around 72,000 people needing hospital treatment for hip fractures each year, the lack of universal FLS coverage is a missed opportunity to prevent further injuries and deaths.

Experts estimate that implementing comprehensive FLS could prevent 74,000 fractures over five years, saving the NHS £665 million. The Royal Osteoporosis Society is calling for immediate action to ensure equitable access to these services, as the current situation disproportionately affects vulnerable populations based on their location.

Despite government promises to roll out FLS by 2030, campaigners argue that without a clear implementation plan, thousands will continue to suffer preventable injuries. This report serves as a critical reminder of the need for equitable healthcare access across the UK, ensuring that where someone lives does not dictate their health outcomes.
