Penzance is set to see a significant change in its high street traffic management as Cornwall Council installs cameras to enforce a daytime traffic ban. This initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety and improve the shopping experience in the town centre. The cameras will monitor Market Jew Street, where restrictions have been in place since 2020, prohibiting vehicle access from 11:00 to 16:00.
Despite these restrictions, data reveals that up to 600 vehicles daily continue to breach the ban, prompting the council to take action. The new enforcement measures will not only address the traffic ban but also enforce additional restrictions at key junctions, ensuring a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
Councillor Dan Rogerson highlighted the community’s support for making the town centre more accessible and pleasant. The installation of these cameras is part of a broader £21 million investment under Penzance’s Town Deal, aimed at revitalising the town and encouraging more visitors.
