Temporary Suspension of Maternity Services at Daisy Hill Hospital

Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry will not deliver babies as the Southern Trust plans to temporarily move maternity services to Craigavon Area Hospital. This decision arises from significant workforce pressures, particularly a shortage of consultant obstetricians. The trust has struggled to recruit sufficient staff, leading to concerns about maintaining a safe maternity service.

While ante and postnatal clinics will continue in Newry, women expecting to give birth at Daisy Hill will need to adjust their plans. The trust’s chief executive has acknowledged the inconvenience this causes families but emphasised that patient safety is the top priority. The situation reflects a broader issue of workforce shortages affecting maternity services across Northern Ireland.

The trust is actively exploring support options to sustain services in the long term, but immediate changes are necessary due to staffing challenges. This shift may lead to increased travel times for expectant mothers, raising concerns about accessibility and choice in their birthing plans.

The potential loss of maternity services at Daisy Hill could spark political tensions and community unrest, similar to past controversies over other hospital services. As the health minister seeks solutions, the impact on families and the local healthcare landscape remains a pressing concern.
