School Shooting in Turkey Raises Concerns Over Gun Control and Safety

A recent shooting outside a high school in Turkey’s Manisa province has left at least 11 pupils injured, with two in critical condition. The shooter, a student at the school, reportedly took a rifle from his grandparents’ home. This incident follows two earlier school shootings this year, highlighting a troubling trend in school safety and gun access in Turkey.

The Turkish government is now facing increased pressure to tighten gun control laws and enhance security measures in schools. Following the earlier shootings, authorities had already increased the presence of school supervisors and police officers, but the latest attack has raised questions about the effectiveness of these measures and the underlying issues of bullying and mental health among students.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into how the student accessed the firearm and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The government is also looking into allegations of bullying that may have contributed to the shooter’s actions, indicating a broader societal issue that needs addressing.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised stricter gun controls in response to the shooting, drawing parallels with similar incidents globally. As the academic year begins, the focus on student safety and mental health is more critical than ever, with the potential for significant policy changes in the near future.
