In a significant move, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the establishment of a new National Centre for Information Defence, aimed at tackling disinformation campaigns, particularly those emanating from Russia. This centre will collaborate with intelligence agencies and social media platforms to counteract misinformation that can influence public perception and national security.

Burnham highlighted the multifaceted threats posed by disinformation, noting that Russian agencies employ various tactics, including bots and fake websites, to manipulate narratives. The prime minister’s speech at the UN emphasized that the Kremlin spends approximately £1.3 billion annually on these efforts, which have already shown their impact during events like the 2019 UK general election.

Moreover, the prime minister underscored the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, describing it as a “multiplier of risk”. He proposed that the UK could serve as an “honest broker” in the global AI landscape, advocating for international cooperation to establish safety standards and transparency in AI development.

As the UK prepares to host the G20, Burnham’s government is poised to push for a collective agreement on AI principles, aiming to mitigate risks while harnessing the technology’s economic potential. This proactive approach not only addresses immediate threats but also sets the stage for the UK’s influence on global AI governance.
