Police and Tech Companies Fail to Protect Women from Online Abuse

A recent report highlights a troubling trend in how police and tech companies handle cases of online abuse against women. Jane, a victim of non-consensual intimate image sharing, found herself dismissed by authorities who advised her to seek help from tech firms, leaving her feeling vulnerable and unsupported. This reflects a broader issue where many women report feeling that their complaints are not taken seriously, often facing victim-blaming attitudes instead of the necessary support.

The report by Refuge and End Violence Against Women reveals that a significant number of women do not report their experiences due to a lack of faith in the system. Many who do report their cases find that their complaints are misunderstood or inadequately addressed. Alarmingly, nearly half of young women surveyed reported experiencing online violence, with a substantial portion feeling suicidal due to the severity of the abuse.

Despite Ofcom’s recent guidance aimed at tech companies to combat online misogyny, the report calls for more robust actions, including legal accountability for tech firms and better training for police. The findings underscore the urgent need for systemic changes to protect women online, as many feel forced to retreat from digital spaces altogether.

As the conversation around online safety evolves, the report emphasizes that tech companies must take a more active role in preventing abuse and that law enforcement needs to adapt to the complexities of online crimes. Without significant changes, the cycle of abuse and inadequate response is likely to continue, leaving many women at risk.
