Aphid Infestation Threatens UK Lettuce Supply

Farmers across Britain are grappling with the worst aphid infestation in 25 years, jeopardising nearly a third of the nation’s lettuce crop. This crisis is particularly severe for crisphead, romaine, and iceberg varieties, with growers in East Anglia predicting losses of up to three million heads, translating to around £1 million in damages.

The prolonged heat and dry conditions this summer have created an ideal environment for the currant-lettuce aphid, which has spread across key lettuce-producing regions. The British Leafy Salads Association has highlighted that the pests strip essential nutrients from crops, rendering vast quantities unsaleable, and the situation is expected to worsen as the season progresses.

Farmers previously relied on neonicotinoid insecticides to combat such outbreaks, but a ban on these chemicals due to their harmful effects on bees has left them with limited options. Research is ongoing to develop aphid-resistant lettuce varieties, but the rapid evolution of these pests complicates efforts.

With the UK consuming around 200,000 tonnes of lettuce annually, and imports making up half of that, the impact of this infestation could ripple through the supply chain. Additionally, European crops are also suffering from similar issues, raising concerns about food security and prices in the coming months.
