UK Migration Rates Hit Lowest Levels Since 2012

Recent Home Office data reveals that UK migration dropped to 171,000 last year, marking a significant decline from previous years and the lowest level since 2012, excluding the pandemic. This reduction is attributed to stricter immigration policies and a decrease in arrivals from outside the EU, particularly for work purposes.

The government has implemented measures such as raising salary thresholds for skilled visas and restricting family member visas for overseas students and care workers. These changes aim to reduce reliance on foreign labour and ensure that migrants contribute positively to the UK economy.

As a result, the number of asylum seekers has also decreased, with 93,525 claims made in the year to March 2026, down 12% from the previous year. However, this figure remains more than double that of pre-pandemic levels, indicating ongoing challenges in managing asylum applications.

The implications of these changes are significant for various sectors, particularly those reliant on migrant labour, such as healthcare and agriculture. As the government continues to tighten immigration controls, businesses may face increased difficulties in filling vacancies, potentially leading to labour shortages in critical areas.
