Nepal Demands Climate Justice After Devastating Floods

Following catastrophic floods that claimed over 1,400 lives, Nepal is demanding $20 million from the UN’s Loss and Damage Fund. Environment Minister Geeta Chaudhary emphasised that mere sympathy is insufficient; the country seeks justice for its climate-related losses. This call for compensation highlights the disproportionate impact of climate change on developing nations, which contribute minimally to global emissions yet suffer the most from its effects.

The floods, exacerbated by rising temperatures and glacial melt, have devastated infrastructure and agriculture, prompting Nepal to push for stronger international commitments at the upcoming COP31 climate conference. Chaudhary’s remarks underscore a growing frustration among vulnerable nations that feel overlooked in global climate discussions.

In addition to seeking financial support, Nepal is also reviewing its disaster response systems, which were overwhelmed during the floods. Residents reported inadequate warnings, prompting calls for improved monitoring and cooperation with neighbouring countries like China to manage shared river systems and glacial hazards.

Chaudhary warns that without urgent action to limit global warming, the frequency and severity of such disasters will increase, posing a dire threat to vulnerable nations. The situation in Nepal serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate justice and effective international support for those most affected by climate change.
