Bentley has launched its first fully electric vehicle, the Torcal SUV, which can travel up to 375 miles on a single charge. This model, priced at £173,000, is part of a £350 million investment aimed at securing jobs at its Crewe factory. The Torcal features a synthetic engine noise designed to evoke the classic growl of Bentley’s combustion engines, targeting a younger audience and those hesitant about electric vehicles.
The introduction of the Torcal comes amid a challenging landscape for luxury car manufacturers, with Bentley’s sales having fallen by a third since their peak in 2022. The company hopes this new model will reinvigorate interest in its brand, especially as it enters a thin market for electric luxury SUVs. Competitors like Rolls-Royce and Range Rover have also recently announced their electric offerings, but Bentley’s approach aims to blend tradition with innovation.
Despite the investment, Bentley’s CEO acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding demand for electric vehicles, especially given the recent cuts in jobs across the automotive sector. While the Torcal represents a significant step for Bentley, the company remains cautious about future electric launches, having previously scaled back ambitious plans due to market conditions.
The Torcal’s launch is part of a broader trend in the UK automotive industry, which has seen recent investments from other manufacturers like Nissan and McLaren. However, the sector faces ongoing pressures from competition, tariffs, and energy costs, raising questions about the sustainability of these investments in the long term.
