The Evolution of Sculpture: AI’s Role in Art

In Carrara, Italy, the traditional craft of marble sculpting is undergoing a significant transformation due to the introduction of AI and robotic technology. These machines can carve intricate sculptures from marble blocks, guided by software that translates digital designs into precise instructions. This innovation raises profound questions about the nature of art and the role of the artist, as machines take on tasks that once required years of training.

The technology, developed by companies like LITIX and ROBOTOR, aims to democratise marble sculpture, allowing individuals without artistic skills to create their visions. By automating up to 99% of the carving process, artisans can focus on refining the final details, potentially making the craft safer and less physically demanding.

However, the shift towards robotic sculpting has sparked mixed reactions among traditional artists. While some fear job loss, others see it as an evolution of their craft. Artists like Davide Quayola view robots as extensions of their creativity, using them to enhance their artistic expression rather than replace it.

As this technology continues to develop, the distinction between the artist’s role and the machine’s capabilities will blur. The future of marble sculpting may not eliminate traditional methods but rather redefine them, leading to a new era of artistic collaboration between humans and machines.
