Meta’s AI Plans to Monitor Teen Users Raise Privacy Concerns

Meta’s recent announcement to use artificial intelligence (AI) for profiling users under 13 on Instagram and Facebook has sparked significant debate. The company aims to identify underage users who may have falsified their birth dates to access these platforms. This move comes amid growing scrutiny over the safety of minors online, particularly after findings from the European Commission highlighted Meta’s failure to prevent underage access.

The AI will analyse various contextual clues from users’ profiles, including birthday posts and school-related content, to determine age. However, critics argue that this approach is invasive, as it may involve assessing physical attributes in photos, raising serious privacy concerns. Experts warn that such data collection could inadvertently create detailed profiles of young users, which may be exploited for targeted advertising.

In the UK, discussions around age restrictions on social media are intensifying, with some advocating for better media literacy education instead of outright bans. Many believe that age limits may not effectively address the underlying issues of harmful content and addictive platform designs that affect adolescents.

As Meta implements these AI measures, parents and guardians should remain vigilant about their children’s online activities. The implications of this technology could extend beyond privacy, potentially reshaping how young people engage with social media and highlighting the need for robust privacy legislation to protect minors.
