Government Reveals Watchlist of Illegal Waste Sites

The Environment Agency has unveiled a new watchlist identifying 117 illegal waste sites across England, including 28 classified as ‘super sites’ containing over 20,000 tonnes of rubbish each. This list aims to increase transparency and inform local communities about waste management issues in their areas.

Among the most concerning sites is a massive 281,000-tonne heap of contaminated soil in Northwich, Cheshire. The agency has highlighted these locations to prioritise clean-up efforts, although it emphasises that not all sites will receive immediate attention due to funding constraints.

Local business owners express frustration, feeling that the watchlist does not guarantee effective action against illegal dumping. The agency has stated that clean-up operations will focus on sites posing serious environmental risks, but many illegal sites may remain unaddressed for some time.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the environmental and community impacts of waste crime. As the agency updates the watchlist monthly, residents are encouraged to report any concerns, highlighting the need for community involvement in tackling this pressing issue.
