Prolonged US-Iran conflict could lead to £8 billion annual economic hit for the UK

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran poses a significant threat to the UK economy, with potential annual costs reaching £8 billion. This figure stems from increased debt servicing costs and reduced tax revenues as the situation escalates.

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) warns that if the conflict continues, consumer price inflation could spike to 5.8%, far exceeding the Bank of England’s target of 2%. This inflationary pressure is particularly concerning as over a quarter of UK government debt is linked to inflation, meaning rising prices directly increase borrowing costs.

For UK residents, this could translate into higher prices for everyday goods and services, as businesses pass on increased costs to consumers. Additionally, economic growth may slow to just 0.3%, impacting job creation and wage growth, further straining household finances.

Looking ahead, the government may need to implement measures such as a temporary energy price cap and reduced fuel duties to mitigate these effects. Monitoring inflation trends and government responses will be crucial in understanding how deeply the conflict will impact the UK economy.
