Beware of marathon entry scams as excitement builds

As the 2026 London Marathon approaches, fraudsters are targeting hopeful runners by offering fake entry transfers. These scams typically involve individuals claiming to sell their marathon place after being unable to participate due to injury. Victims are asked to pay a fee, often around £79, under the false pretense that they can secure a spot in the race.

The London Marathon organisers have made it clear that all entries are non-transferable, meaning that no one can legally sell or transfer their place to another runner. This is a crucial detail that many potential victims may overlook in their eagerness to participate. The scammers exploit this excitement, using poor grammar and unofficial communication methods to lure in unsuspecting individuals.

For UK residents, this means that as marathon season approaches, there is an increased risk of falling victim to such scams. Those who are disappointed about not securing a place should be particularly cautious and only engage with official channels for entry. Paying via bank transfer offers no consumer protection, making it easier for fraudsters to disappear with victims’ money.

Going forward, runners should be vigilant and aware of the signs of scams, such as requests for bank transfers and poor communication. It’s advisable to report any suspicious activity to the marathon organisers and to be cautious about sharing personal information online.
