Tigray’s Ongoing Exclusion from Ethiopian Politics Raises Concerns

As Ethiopia approaches its 2026 elections, the Tigray region remains excluded from the political process for the second consecutive time. This absence marks a decade without representation in the national parliament, raising questions about Tigray’s future within Ethiopia. The ongoing tensions between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) highlight the fragility of peace in the region, with many fearing a resurgence of conflict.

The lack of political representation is not just a bureaucratic issue; it reflects deeper societal fractures. With over 40% of Tigray’s territory reportedly under external control, the region’s ability to conduct a fair election is severely compromised. Millions of internally displaced individuals have yet to return home, further complicating any potential electoral process.

The 2020-2022 civil war has left a lasting impact, and despite a peace agreement, the political landscape remains volatile. The TPLF’s recent actions, including restoring its regional council, signal a potential escalation in tensions, as the federal government has not effectively engaged with Tigray’s leadership.

For ordinary Ethiopians, especially those in Tigray, the implications are dire. The absence of a stable political framework could lead to renewed violence, affecting not only the region but also the broader stability of Ethiopia. As the country prepares for elections, the situation in Tigray serves as a stark reminder of the unresolved issues that could ignite further conflict.
