Why a £5 Deposit on Vapes Could Change Recycling in the UK

Waste companies are advocating for a £5 deposit on vapes to improve recycling rates and reduce fire hazards. Despite a ban on disposable vapes, many are still improperly discarded, leading to dangerous fires in waste facilities. The proposed deposit would incentivise proper disposal, as customers would receive their money back when returning vapes to designated recycling points.

Currently, vapes can be returned to shops or recycling facilities, but many consumers remain unaware or indifferent to these options. The Environmental Services Association argues that a deposit system could significantly enhance recycling efforts, addressing both environmental concerns and safety issues.

However, some vape manufacturers oppose the idea, fearing it may push consumers towards illicit retailers who do not comply with the deposit scheme. This could undermine the intended benefits of the proposal, as unregulated sales could lead to more waste and safety risks.

As the government considers this proposal, the focus will be on how to effectively enforce recycling and ensure that consumers are educated about proper disposal methods. The outcome could reshape how vapes are managed in the UK, impacting both the environment and public safety.
