Iran’s Energy Crisis: A Looming Imbalance Amidst War

As summer approaches, Iran faces a critical energy imbalance exacerbated by rising temperatures and increased demand for air conditioning. Despite possessing the world’s third-largest crude oil reserves, the country is struggling to meet its energy needs, leading to fuel imports and potential shortages. The government’s long-standing practice of subsidising energy prices has created a reliance on low-cost fuel, but with the economy strained by war and sanctions, these subsidies are becoming unsustainable.

The Iranian administration has implemented a tiered pricing system for petrol, but this has led to confusion and frustration among consumers. Many are now facing skyrocketing energy bills, with reports of monthly costs tripling for small businesses. The government’s reluctance to raise prices further, due to fears of social unrest, leaves them with limited options to address the growing demand and dwindling supply.

With strikes on energy facilities and threats of further military action, the situation is likely to worsen. The government’s attempts to manage consumption through emergency fuel cards have resulted in long queues at petrol stations, highlighting the disconnect between supply and demand. As the summer progresses, the potential for blackouts and gas shortages looms large, impacting daily life for Iranians.

Experts warn that without significant reforms, the energy crisis will continue to deepen, affecting not only households but also small businesses already struggling under economic pressure. The Iranian government must navigate these challenges carefully to avoid triggering widespread discontent among its citizens.
