The Hidden Costs of Transitioning Young People with SEN

Alma White, a mother of an autistic teenager, has highlighted the financial and emotional struggles faced by families of young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) as they transition from school to adulthood. During a presentation to Northern Ireland’s Education Committee, she described how these young people are often viewed merely as ‘price tags’ in a system that lacks coherent support.

The absence of a statutory Education, Health and Care plan in Northern Ireland means that families face a fragmented transition process, leaving many without clear pathways to further education or training. This gap not only affects the immediate support available but also has long-term implications for the independence and quality of life of these individuals.

Parents like Karen Ryan have voiced their concerns that the current system fails to recognise the unique needs of their children, particularly when it comes to accessing adult disability services. The existing IQ threshold for support creates barriers, leaving some young people without the necessary assistance as they age out of school.

As the clock ticks towards the next assembly elections in 2027, the urgency for reform grows. Without immediate action, families fear that the costs associated with inadequate support will escalate, impacting not just their finances but the futures of their children. The call for a comprehensive support plan is not just about education; it’s about ensuring equity and dignity for all young people with SEN.
