Farmers Face Water Crisis at South of England Show

As the South of England Show kicks off, water access emerges as a critical concern for farmers in Sussex and Surrey. With the region experiencing one of the driest springs on record, many farmers are grappling with severe water shortages that threaten their livelihoods and food production capabilities.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has highlighted the urgent need for guaranteed water access, emphasizing that without it, food security for the nation is at risk. This year’s show, marking its 58th anniversary, serves as a platform for farmers to discuss these pressing issues and connect with the community.

The impact of water shortages extends beyond agriculture; it affects household water supply, with many taps running dry across the region. The NFU’s Vice President, Robyn Munt, and other members are present to advocate for solutions that address both immediate and long-term water management challenges.

Additionally, the ongoing conflict in Iran is exacerbating the situation by driving up fuel and fertiliser prices, further straining farmers. The government is working with the NFU to mitigate these impacts, but the situation remains precarious as farmers prepare for a challenging season ahead.
