Europe’s Economic Reckoning with China: A Delayed Response

Ursula von der Leyen’s 2023 speech on EU-China relations has gained renewed significance as Europe grapples with economic challenges stemming from its reliance on China. Her warnings about unfair competition and economic coercion have become increasingly relevant as the EU faces a growing trade deficit with Beijing, marking a pivotal moment for European industries and jobs.

The call for a strategic shift towards ‘de-risking’ trade has been largely ignored, leading to fears of de-industrialisation across the continent. Member states have struggled to unite on a coherent response, often deferring responsibility to private companies, which are reluctant to incur higher costs by moving away from Chinese suppliers.

Recent shifts in rhetoric from leaders like Emmanuel Macron signal a potential turning point, as they advocate for stronger protective measures against Chinese economic practices. However, the EU’s path forward remains fraught with challenges, particularly given China’s significant economic influence.

As the EU reassesses its trade strategies, the urgency for a collective response grows. The need for a unified approach to economic security is more pressing than ever, as Europe seeks to balance competition with fairness in its dealings with China.
