Nuclear Arms Race Resurfaces Amid Global Tensions

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has reported a concerning trend: nuclear weapons are making a comeback as nations increasingly rely on nuclear deterrence. This shift is particularly evident in countries like Finland and Sweden, which have altered their nuclear policies following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and their NATO accession. This marks a significant departure from their historical stance on nuclear disarmament.

As of 2025, nearly 12,200 nuclear weapons exist globally, with a slight decrease from the previous year. However, this does not indicate disarmament; rather, the pace of dismantling old warheads is slowing while new deployments are on the rise. SIPRI warns that this trend could lead to an escalation in arms races, as states prioritize nuclear capabilities over disarmament commitments.

The implications for the UK are profound, as it remains one of the few European nations with nuclear capabilities. With France and the UK as the primary nuclear powers in Western Europe, discussions around nuclear sharing and deterrence strategies are becoming increasingly relevant, especially in light of shifting US commitments to NATO.

As global tensions rise, the focus on nuclear weapons could reshape international relations and security policies, prompting countries to reconsider their military strategies and alliances. The potential for an arms race poses risks not only to national security but also to global stability, making this a critical issue for policymakers and citizens alike.
