New Law Could Designate Iranian Group as National Threat

The UK government is moving to introduce the National Security (State Threats) Bill, which could label Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a national security threat. This legislation, expected to pass within weeks, allows the home secretary to designate state-linked organisations involved in activities like assassination and sabotage as threats.

This bill comes in response to increasing foreign aggression, particularly from Iran, which has been linked to several violent incidents in the UK. The legislation aims to address the challenges posed by hostile foreign powers using criminal proxies to undermine UK security, a tactic that has become more prevalent in recent years.

The new law will create three criminal offences, including supporting designated state threat organisations. This could significantly impact how the UK handles foreign threats, as it expands the scope beyond traditional intelligence services to include groups like the IRGC.

As the bill progresses, it highlights a shift in national security strategy, reflecting the urgent need to adapt to evolving threats. The government believes that this legislation will enhance the UK’s ability to respond to foreign state activities that threaten lives and democratic institutions.
