The redevelopment of the Union Corner site near Glasgow Central Station, devastated by fire in March, may not commence for several years. Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken has indicated that the planning and consultation process could extend until around 2030 due to the complex ownership structure of the site.
The fire, which originated in a vape shop, left only the façade of the historic building intact. Multiple ownerships complicate the path to redevelopment, as the site is managed by Stelmain for Dunaskin Properties, while the ground-floor unit is owned by Afton Estates.
In the interim, the council is focused on ensuring the site is safe and plans to reopen Union Street as soon as possible. A recovery group has been established, including design and architecture representatives, to explore potential future uses for the site.
This lengthy delay in redevelopment could have significant implications for local businesses and the community, as the area remains cordoned off, impacting foot traffic and economic activity in the vicinity.
