In a significant drug bust, investigators seized nearly half a tonne of cocaine valued at approximately £35 million from a fishing boat in Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne. The operation, carried out by the National Crime Agency (NCA), led to the arrest of five men aged between 32 and 49, who are suspected of retrieving the drugs after they were dropped in the English Channel by another vessel.
The NCA’s Maritime, Aviation and Military Intervention Cell, alongside Sussex Police and Police Scotland, played a crucial role in the operation. The drugs, weighing 425kg, represent a substantial blow to the organised crime group involved in their importation, potentially disrupting their operations significantly.
Authorities have also conducted searches in Scotland as part of the investigation. The NCA’s Carl Barrass highlighted the importance of this seizure, noting that it would hinder the group’s ability to continue their illicit activities.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking, particularly in coastal areas where smugglers may exploit maritime routes. The ramifications of such operations extend beyond immediate arrests, impacting the wider network of organised crime in the UK.
