UK and Allies Target Settler Violence in West Bank

The UK, along with Australia, Canada, France, and Norway, has imposed sanctions on networks believed to finance and enable violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. This action is a response to a significant rise in settler attacks, which have surged since the onset of the Gaza conflict. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans on individuals and entities linked to these violent acts.

The UK Foreign Office has specifically highlighted the involvement of certain organisations in supporting settler farms and construction projects that destroy Palestinian land. For the first time, the UK will also advise businesses against engaging in economic activities within illegal settlements, marking a shift in its approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

These measures aim to hold extremist settlers accountable and address the impunity they have historically enjoyed. The joint statement from the five nations underscores the urgent need for accountability from the Israeli government regarding settler violence, which often occurs with the backing of Israeli security forces.

The sanctions have been met with condemnation from Israel, which views them as politically motivated actions disguised as measures against violence. However, the Palestinian foreign ministry has welcomed the sanctions, viewing them as a rejection of Israel’s ongoing occupation and settlement expansion in the West Bank.
