AI Cameras Installed to Combat Railway Trespassing in Dingwall

In Dingwall, AI-powered cameras have been installed at notorious railway crossings to tackle a significant trespassing issue. This initiative follows alarming statistics, with an average of five trespassing incidents reported daily last June, including dangerous situations involving children and pets. The cameras not only detect when individuals stray from designated paths but also issue audio warnings and relay live images to the British Transport Police.

The decision to implement these measures stems from a pattern of risky behaviour, as many locals have been using a railway bridge as a shortcut to access the beach or town centre. Network Rail has emphasised the dangers of such actions, highlighting that trains cannot stop quickly and that trespassing can have tragic consequences for both individuals and railway staff.

In recent months, there have been multiple incidents of near misses, including a teenager who narrowly avoided being struck by a train. The British Transport Police have expressed concern over the rising number of trespassing cases, reiterating that entering railway tracks is illegal and poses severe risks.

As these AI cameras begin operation, the hope is that they will deter trespassers and enhance safety at these critical crossings. This technology represents a proactive approach to preventing accidents and safeguarding the community, but it also underscores the need for public awareness about railway safety.
