A 30-year-old man, Hadi Alodid, has been charged with attempted murder following a knife attack in north Belfast. The incident, which occurred on Monday night, left the victim, Steven Ogilvy, in critical condition, having lost an eye and sustaining severe injuries to his neck and back. Alodid appeared in court via video link, where he faced additional charges for possessing a knife in public and threatening an NHS worker.

During the court proceedings, police opposed bail, citing risks of public disorder and potential reoffending. The judge, Steven Keown, agreed, highlighting the significant public concern surrounding the case. Alodid’s refusal of legal representation and his nodding response to a bail inquiry raised eyebrows, indicating a complex situation that may unfold further in the coming weeks.

The attack has sparked considerable media attention and community unrest, with local residents expressing fear and anger. The police have noted the potential for protests, reflecting broader societal tensions around violence and safety in public spaces.

As the case progresses, it underscores the ongoing challenges faced by emergency services and the legal system in addressing violent crime. The court’s decision to remand Alodid into custody until his next appearance on July 8th aims to mitigate risks to public safety and maintain order in the community.
