Heatwave Hits Portugal Just in Time for St Anthony’s Day Celebrations

A surge of hot air from North Africa is set to blanket Portugal, coinciding with St Anthony’s Day festivities. From June 10 to 14, temperatures are expected to soar, with the hottest day falling on June 12, reaching between 35 and 40 °C across much of the country. This extreme heat is not just a seasonal spike; it could influence local celebrations and public safety measures.

As people flock to Lisbon for the celebrations, the intense heat may alter how festivities are enjoyed. With night-time lows expected to hover around 20 °C, attendees will need to adapt their plans, prioritising hydration and comfort. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow heat warning, highlighting the potential health risks associated with such high temperatures.

The reduction in wind strength will exacerbate the heat, making it feel even more oppressive. This could lead to increased demand for cooling solutions, impacting local businesses and services. The heatwave’s timing, just before the official start of summer, may also set the tone for the season ahead, influencing tourism and outdoor activities.

As the country prepares for the heat, it’s essential for both locals and visitors to stay informed and take precautions. The upcoming days will not only test the resilience of the community but also shape the summer experience for many in Portugal.
