Hungary and Ukraine Forge New Path with Minority Rights Agreement

Hungary and Ukraine have reached a significant agreement aimed at improving the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, particularly in the Transcarpathia region. This development comes after years of strained relations under former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who had a hostile stance towards Ukraine. The new Hungarian Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, has described the deal as ‘historic,’ claiming it will restore fundamental rights to around 100,000 Hungarians.

The agreement includes provisions for the use of minority languages in public administration, which is a requirement for Ukraine’s EU accession. This means that bilingual signs will be introduced in areas where the Hungarian population exceeds 10%. While some rights already existed, the new measures aim to clarify and enhance these provisions, making it easier for minority languages to be used in government institutions.

Despite this positive step, Magyar has not committed to military support for Ukraine, reflecting a cautious approach to foreign policy. The agreement is seen as a potential turning point, paving the way for future cooperation and dialogue between the two nations. It also signals a shift in Hungary’s foreign relations strategy, moving away from Orban’s confrontational rhetoric.

As both countries prepare for a potential meeting between Magyar and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the hope is that this agreement will foster a new era of constructive relations, benefiting both the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe.
