As the ninth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire approaches, bereaved families and survivors are preparing for a poignant remembrance event. This year is particularly significant as it marks the last anniversary before the tower’s complete demolition, a decision that has sparked mixed emotions among those affected. The Metropolitan Police have announced that up to 20 companies and 57 individuals could face criminal charges related to the disaster, which claimed 72 lives in 2017.

The potential charges include serious offences such as corporate gross negligence manslaughter and health and safety breaches. Survivors like Edward Daffarn express hope for accountability but also frustration over the lengthy wait for justice. The public inquiry into the fire revealed systemic failures in fire safety regulations and the manipulation of safety testing, highlighting a culture of negligence within the building industry.

This anniversary will feature a silent walk and the reading of victims’ names, serving as a reminder of the lives lost and the ongoing fight for justice. The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission is also working on plans for a permanent memorial, aiming to create a space for reflection and remembrance in the community.

As the demolition progresses, the emotional impact on survivors and families remains profound. Many are grappling with the loss of a physical space to commemorate their loved ones, underscoring the need for meaningful memorialisation as the community seeks to heal and ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated.
