M&S Plans Major Store Expansion in West Lancashire

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced plans to replace its existing food hall in Ormskirk with an expansive 18,000-square-foot megastore in nearby Burscough. This new location, set to be three times the size of the current store, aims to enhance the shopping experience with features like an in-store bakery, dedicated wine and flower shops, and a click-and-collect area. If approved by the West Lancashire Council, the move could significantly alter local shopping dynamics.

While the new store promises to bring more variety and convenience to residents, concerns have been raised about its impact on Ormskirk’s town centre. Local shoppers fear that relocating M&S could lead to a decline in foot traffic, potentially affecting other businesses in the area. The current store’s accessibility is a key advantage, especially for those who walk or cycle, and many locals worry that the new site may not be as convenient.

M&S has committed to transferring existing employees from Ormskirk to the new store and plans to hire an additional 25 staff members. The megastore will also feature ample parking, accommodating 152 vehicles, which could attract more shoppers from surrounding areas. However, this could also lead to increased traffic congestion in Burscough, raising further concerns among residents.

As M&S continues to expand its footprint, the decision on the new store will be closely watched. It reflects broader trends in retail where convenience and accessibility are paramount, but it also highlights the delicate balance between growth and maintaining the charm of local communities.
