A Glasgow drama teacher has been banned from teaching for two years after entering a sexual relationship with a former pupil. The relationship began after the student turned 18, but the case raised serious concerns about professional boundaries in education.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) found that while some allegations regarding the teacher’s conduct during the pupil’s time at school were not proven, her failure to maintain appropriate boundaries was evident. The panel highlighted the importance of trust in the teaching profession and the potential risks posed by such relationships.

This case underscores the ongoing debate about teacher-student relationships, particularly as they relate to safeguarding and professional conduct. The teacher admitted to having a relationship with the pupil after he left school, but the panel noted that her lack of insight into the implications of her actions posed a risk to herself and others.

The ruling serves as a reminder of the standards expected from educators and the need for clear boundaries. With public confidence in teaching at stake, the decision aims to deter similar conduct in the future, reinforcing the importance of maintaining professionalism in educational settings.
