The UN has announced that nearly 2.4 million refugees will require resettlement in 2027, highlighting a critical shortage of options as many countries reduce their resettlement quotas. This situation poses significant challenges for refugees who cannot safely return to their home countries and face increasing risks in their current asylum locations.
Afghan refugees represent the largest group in need, followed by those from South Sudan, Syria, and the Rohingya community from Myanmar. The UNHCR’s report indicates a 6% decrease in the number of refugees needing resettlement compared to last year, attributed partly to some Afghans returning home under difficult conditions and changes in the political landscape in Syria.
In 2025, only about 37,000 refugees were resettled through UNHCR assistance, a stark decline from 116,000 in 2024. This drop is largely linked to the United States’ significant cut in refugee admissions, a trend mirrored by other countries that have also reduced their quotas or suspended resettlement programs altogether.
The UNHCR stresses the urgent need for countries to recommit to refugee protection and resettlement solutions. Expanding resettlement opportunities is not only achievable but essential to address the growing humanitarian crisis faced by millions of vulnerable individuals worldwide.
